Pioneer Tool Strap Method

I apologize. I have done many searches before I did this thread. Some refer to pictures that have pioneer tools mounted. But the pictures are way too small. I have tried the TMs and have not been able to find exact instructions to mount the tools. I have two different size straps. One of the longer straps seems to be correct for the left side of the handles of the axe and mattock. The other ones just don't make sense. I know that my mattock head has the pick that is too long to fit under the lip of the bed. I will have to either find another one or most likely will grind the one I have down a little. The shovel uses one of the long straps most likely and I just need to see the "routing" of the strap.

Sorry to ask but I tried to find the info and did not.

Note as you pull any strap tight, you force the tool tighter into the mounts. I just tucked the extra flaps wherever I could.

Note as well, you have to install the pick head first, it won't go in after the axe and pick handles are strapped in.

Thank you very much for taking the time to take the pictures and post them. That is EXACTLY what I needed. I can now finally get them mounted correctly. I did get the handles correct on the driver side. But the other three, well, far from what you have.

What I have found is that my mattock head will not fit at all because it is just a little too long. I think I will just grind the point end down a little and then it will fit. Your tools are in great condition, much better than the ones that I had on the truck in Germany. I like them painted OD. That is the way they were when we had them "Back in the day". Also, I was reading instructions on some piece of NOS vintage M715 accessory that I was installing. It said that the shiny bolts and hardware were to be painted the same color as the truck when the vehicle was in combat. I would think that was a no-brainer. But you know that military has to spell it all out.

My pick bottom (the blade end) was just a smidge too wide to fit into the slot. Ground off with an angle grinder.

BTW, these were NOS tools, I just oversprayed them with OD.

I have found that Krylon makes an OD Camouflage color paint in a spray can that is close in appearance. It looks a lot like weathered (oxidized) original finish. It is available at Wal Mart and Ace Hardware. Usually about $4 a can. I have used it as the base coat so that I don't have to use as much of the GILLESPIE 24087 on small items. I am not suggesting painting the truck with the Krylon, but if you have a small project, it can be a good base over the primer. Painting the pioneer tool comes to mind...

I was able to scan a slide and this is how my pioneer tools in Germany were strapped. It seems to match the much better pictures that Scott posted on the first page. Thanks again Scott for taking the time to post the pictures.

Notice too that the tailgate chain covers were rubber. I recently obtained some NOS rubber covers that a vendor was selling on the auction site. So I will be replacing the canvas ones that I have now.

If you've received the new covers, what kind of shape are the 40+ year old rubbers? If you find that they rot out quickly once exposed to outdoor stresses, a cut bicycle tire tube works well and looks similar.

They were still sealed in a thick polyethylene plastic bag. They are like new. I also got a second set. They are just about the correct size to put on the 4WD/Low Range levers. That is what I plan to do.

I would guess that these 40+ year old rubbers are OK. Now, there are other rubbers that may not cut it ;)

Hey Don, is that a part number stenciled on the axe handle?
And did you put the yellow bands on the handles?

Yep, my truck number, SVC-175. I will be painting my truck with the same VIN and identification number. There will be a little discontinuity though since my truck is titled a 1969 and the ID number will be 03J27168; a 1968. Oh well!

I have remnants of the original tailgate chain covers on my truck yet. I got some of those offered on ebay, they are thicker and not the same.

I am going to use shrink tubing for my truck. Available at your finer electronic parts sites or stores. It matches the thickness much better than the ones I got off ebay.

Notice in your photo how easily it flexes with the chains.

I got the rubber ones from a vendor on eBay. I think they came originally from VPW but I am not sure. I also have the canvas ones but I believe that they should be period correct on the 3/4 ton truck; not sure. On a side note, the rubber chain covers are a good replacement for the rubber handles on the 4WD/Low shifter levers. That is what I intend to do...

I just received my straps from Surplus City Jeep parts today.

I went out to put them on and ended up back in the house to look for this thread to see how it is supposed to be done.

Nothing beats good photos when it comes to explaining how something should be done. Just my opinion, but I like the look of the O.D. canvas covers for the tailgate chains. The rubber ones are probably more durable, but my truck is not a daily driver so the cavas should last awhile. I don't recall seeing rubber covers from my time in the Army.

I do agree, pictures are the best. If you look at the closeup scan that I posted above, I think you can see that my truck, in 1970 had the rubber chain covers. I do agree that the canvas ones look great though...

My truck has the original chain covers on them and they are rubber. They have a hole in them at the bottom. They are thinner than the ones that the seller on ebay was selling. I would say that they are more like the shrink tubing you can get for electrical work.

As for the straps for the tools, this is what I came up with when I got them. Compares to what Don Cavey had in his pics from Germany in '70.

Another question somewhat related. How do you guys strap the Jerry can. If I go through the footmans loop on the bed it pulls the can into the bed.

Was the original style riveted to the footman loop. If so, how was the can kept off the bed?

Right now I'm using a one piece strap and just bypassed the footmans loop for now.

I have an original one piece strap, and I loop it thru the footman loop. Otherwise I think the weight of the full gas can would droop the bracket.

I tried it the way u have it, using a similar strap. It's just loose. It can move around and still hit the bed. This was my idea using a tailgate puck. It's just set in there now for the picture but thinking of making it permanent.

Not sure why you need the puck. Did you run the strap through both slots in the gas can holder? is your strap cotton or nylon? Mine have all been nice and tight.

My strap is nylon. I can't imagine needing it either, but nothing keeps the strap from pulling the can toward the bed. I did go through both slots in the holder and the strap is running under the holder not under the tank.

I don't know what they're called, but I see 3 (in the pics) upside-down mount brackets. One that the shovel handle is resting on top of, one by the wheel well, and one on the back corner/bed post. Can you tell me what those are for?

Ahhhh...... I think I just (slowly) figured out my own answer. Those are for the canvas cargo top, huh?
I just bought my 67 this year, just got an engine put in and got it back. Converted to 12V. I'm the least mechanical person alive, but going to try to do as much of the small stuff I can myself. Love my truck, trying to figure these things out.

where can i find thoses straps ? im just starting on restoring and trying to get odd little stuff out the way

Hello Don, I just wanted to pile on and say thank you, I'm a noob and I'm working on a couple of M715s that really need the pioneer tools to complete the look. We would never have figured out the strap method without your post so thanks again.

can anyone say the exact length of these straps? I've heard that they are two different size.

21" and 34" on repro from New Life Canvas.

I was looking at the pic ax install and was thinking the strap should also pull it back some instead of pulling it to the side. Here is what I came up with.
