What do I need to know about rear ends?

Both of my M715s are making noises that make me uncomfortable. My 68 with stock axles makes LOUD noise under deceleration, I understand this may be caused by pinion bearing preload problems. My 67 with CUCV axles is making noises I think are from the carrier bearings. I have not built or adjusted anything inside an axle before. Are these repairs somthing a reasonably intelegent detail minded person (OK maybe I'm giving myself too much credit) could do correctly? I know it may mean buying some new tools, but thats a good thing, or should I leave this work to someone with experience?

You understand that these trucks are obnoxiously noisy from the get-go right? Mine screams and cries all day long with no real issues. The T-case can make a horrendous whine and even at neighborhood speed you can hear it coming a block away.

If either truck has the NP200, I would assume that's the culprit and learn to live with it. If it's something else making the noise, it'll let you know when it's good and ready, at the most inopportune time. Alessi's truck however has a 205 so it should be considerably quieter. By carrier bearings, I assume you mean at the diff - what leads you to blaming these particular bearings?

Check for play at the pinion, and make sure the pinion nut is tight to spec., also run a magnet through the fluid to check for metal as Robert said and hopefully it may be something simple and easy/cheap.

If the t-case is the whine source, move the rear driveshaft to the primary outlet - that kills 80%+ of the noise.

There's a thread on here somewhere about that.
