Tow Bar Set Up
Post by barrman on Nov 30, 2006, 9:45am
I know this has been asked years ago. I just can't remember the answer.
With the military tow bar. What is the recommeded length for using it? Which is better longers or shortest? I figure they put the 7 different length settings in there for a reason besides bumper clearance in tight turns. I could be wrong though.
Thanks.

Don't know about tow bars, but as a rule the longer a trailer tongue the better it pulls.

could it something to compensate for all the different vehicles that could tow/be towed...
really wouldn't want a short tow bar behind a 5 ton wrecker, the crane part would whack the windshield/hood of the towed vehicle, along with turning radius considerations...

Keep it as short as possible. Here's a link to a PDF of the Towbar manual on SteelSoldiers. It's a very small file, just right click and "Save Target As".
http://www.steelsoldiers.com/index.php?m....fid=file&pid=56
For the record, it has a lot to do with the vehicle and how it is mounted, either using the shackle brackets, the bumper/axle clamps, etc. Hooking to the bumper wil require a lot less length than reaching back under the bumper to get to the axle itself.

Thanks Lanty. I looked through the SS manaul page for it before I posted this and must have skipped over it.

No problem guys. I had it on the PC at home and I knew I got it from SteelSoldiers a while back so I knew it had to be in there somewhere. It's sometimes hard to find the manual you want if you don't know the TM number with the many Deuce related manuals in there, lol. Glad I could help. There are also some interesting manuals on there relating to recovery that detail how the towbar is used with the various wreckers on different vehicles and situations. Interesting stuff.

THE REASON ITS ADJUSTABLE IS THE M715 HAS NARROWER MOUNTING POINTS THAN THE M35 ETC. INSTALL IT AS LONG AS POSSIBLE AND IT STILL ALL PIN TOGETHER.
