Fuel Tank Ground
I got fed up with replacing fuel filters and took the advice of a fellow Zoner and had my fuel tank 'tanked.' I got it back on Friday. Amazing difference. I can actually see clear fuel in my filters now, not a brownish colored liquid. While I had the tank out, I converted my fuel gauge sending unit to a 0-90 Ohm 12 volt one. I will post pictures and text when my film gets developed. I used the stock #28 wire for the sender unit at the tank and at the gauge. When I removed the tank, I noticeda wire bolted to the frame just hanging near the tank. I assumed this was a ground for the fuel tank. When I put fuel back in it and turned everything on, my fuel gauge didn't work. I touched the unconnected ground wire to the tank and the gauge worked. It has worked ever since with the ground wire unhooked.
Is there a ground wire for the tank in its stock form?
If yes, then where does it attach to the tank at? and how?
Thanks

There is a wire that is labeled GRD on the metal tag that runs to the frame next to the tank and, if I remember right, to one of the sending unit mount screws...let me check on that part...but yes there is one and it goes to the drivers frame rail.

Yep, in the online manuals section under Early wiring harness, I made a page that documents the whole wiring on an early style turn signal/dist box setup. The fuel gauge wires are all the same as far as I know, either early or late.
On the ground for the gauge, it shows that there is a wire with a ring terminal mounting approx 6 inches ahead of the centerline of the rear leaf springs front eye. That has a male waterproof connector on it. Then from the sending unit, comes the female end of the wire to plug to this, and it also has a ring terminal on the end which uses one of the sending unit mount screws to mount.
Hope that helps ya!

Thanks Jon. The wire I have must have been pinched off or from the looks of it, somebody applied power to it. It looks burned. The next time I have the tank off, I will make a new wire. Your discription of where it mounts to the frame is perfect. Thanks again.
