New E-Brake drum is painted and installed now with new hardware. I really wanted the drum spun and balanced to alleviate any of my previous concerns but A- it costs too much to go to a civilian balance shop and B- my past FREE WORK contacts in the U.S. Navy world have all rotated and transferred out of the 92A "Sound Analysis and Balance" Repair Shops on the ships and shore duty billets so, I'll leave my fears behind for now.

Working on the transfer case and e-brake clevis' and linkage today. :-D Hopefully my new E-Brake band from VPW will arrive today. (fingers crossed)
Stay safe and stay happy folks!

WOW! The new E Brake band and return springs arrived from VPW today. Big difference compared to what I removed from the truck. My brake was grease and oil soaked and burnt out and the return springs were collapsed. .
Best wishes from Newport News, Va.

Shift levers all installed. I have a spacer problem though. Previous owner(s) must have lost the spacers and used flat washers. I'll replace the washers with bushings next week when I'm off from work again. I'm really liking the OD paint. The new hand grips are a nice touch I'd say.

Looking very good Dave!
You make me feel like a slacker the last two weeks.:)
Dave, regarding balancing the brake drum. Check local Harley shops, perhaps they can point you to a shop that does Harley flywheel balancing. Best would be to leave the hub assembled to it with index mark(s) for future work if necessary.

Hi all! Well the new E Brake band is installed now. I have a little touch up detail painting to do. Have a feeling adjusting this thing isn't going to be very simple.
Best wishes!

Looking good.
The service manual tells to adjust the band by using a feeler gauge.
The procedure sounds easy enough.
But, mine is contacting the drum in places after doing so, as the band isn't perfectly concentric.
Might need to wear in, then readjust.
You said that your drum didn't show any signs of overheating, but boy, those old springs sure look like it.
And if the brake band is not concentric and is rubbing in a few places, you may be able to "Adjust" it with some sandpaper in strategic locations. I still have this task to accomplish. No doubt, my brake band is saturated with oil. Which old one isn't ? ;)

Well, we got the rear axle halfs and hubs apart last night. Time to clean them up, paint the hub outer sides, install new bearings - seals paint the brake plates and get it back together. :D
Have a good day everyone!
