Thread: Disabling a lock out hub

Default Disabling a lock out hub

A lock out hub destroyed itself. Metal dust all over. Is there a way to re-install it without the innards? Of course, the front axle will not be engaged until I replace the hubs, probably the end of July.
    Thanks all.

Depends on the hub, but likely yes

Or just reinstall the drive flange on the hub. I carry a drive flange in the truck for this very reason.

That's still an option, Nailhead. I am hoping to keep some of my unlocked mpg's though. But I have no idea what the difference would be between the two solutions.
I don't like the idea of leaving the end of the axle unsupported. I suspect the axles turn just by friction, but I don't know how much. And maybe it doesn't matter if they are supported or not.

    Thanks!

In the M715 setup, the axle turns because it is connected by the drive flange to the hub...the hub obviously is turning when the wheel is turning....so, stock, anytime the wheel turns the axle turns.

The lockout hub disengages the splines in, basically what is the new drive hub, from the axle with a spring. Thus the axle does not turn when the hub and wheel turn.

i wouldnt want to run one without the axle end supported by one of these...maybe for a short distance at low speed it might work, but for miles especially at road speeds, not a good idea...
