Default Noobie questions - oil and filter

This may be covered somewhere on the forum but I can't seem to find it. The questions are: 1. what oil is best for the Tornado engine? 2. what oil filter is best?
the oil it came with is black as coal so I want to change it right away. Any tips or cautions would be helpful too.
    Thanks in advance.

Any oil pretty much will work. The -10 manual list out the exact specifications for what is supposed to be in there. However, if you have a leaking rear seal like mine was. Go mineral based and 20w-50 to keep it in there a few minutes longer. Otherwise, I like the Rotella T6 diesel synthetic. All the wear stuff old engines need and can stay in there for months without worry.

Filter in my opinion is any but Fram and more specific. Wix. That is just my opinion though.
Remember if you didn't build it you can't call it yours.

Thanks for the info. I checked the Wix 51258 and the Fram PH11 and a bunch of others. Now it pretty much down to whose reputation you trust.

I used Rotella oil most of the time but last time, changed to 10W30 Penzoil. I think I will go back to the Rotella. As for the oil filter, I use the NAPA one for Fords, similar to the PH8A. I am not in the garage now so I don't have the NAPA number but will get it. Never a problem. I am in Florida, so heavier oil should be the norm and when these truck were manufactured, 30W was the norm.

because today's gasoline engine oils have all the top-end lubricating sulfur compounds removed, the diesel-rated oils are best. You can get a bottle of the top-end lubricant to add to the gasoline engine oils.

I just use Delo or Rotella 10W-40. and a Wix filter.

seems rotella is the preferred oil. the Wix filter is also the front runner. thanks all for your input.
