I wonder if they are illegal for civvie use?

if my truck was a daily, I'd consider it. But for occational use, I am not sure the benefit of long life would offset the higher cost (assuming the cost is higher.)

Still hard to imagine an LED being brighter then a good H4 bulb.

Sure would be nice though.

An LED will outperform incandescent in harsh conditions, service life and quality of light.

Apparently they tested them on vehicles in Alaska and got a contract to replace 250,000 vehicle lights.

Rumor I saw said pricing was like $300/ea

If you look real close at some of the combat pictures and news reports you will see MV's with those LED headlights in active duty right now.

The only downside to LED's over the past several years was color index. The most recent iterations of them however have overcome that problem. In the not to distant future, your going to see a massive surge of them in all lighting applications mainly due to performance and efficiency.

When the LED headlights rst came ou on civvy vehicles, motorcycles in fact, they were supplimentary to the incandescant one that was still there...very low angle of dispersion and not quite white but bright, like dont turn it on and stand in front of the bike and look into it bright....short story you can figure out...

Well, the cost of $600 for a pair of headlights is a BIG downside for me.
Especially when they can be broken fairly easy (not that bad, but they are still easily broken for being $300 EACH!).

I would like to see a side by side comparison for lumens, spread and throw of those lights.

For that price I'd go for the HID conversions first, or better yet a set of HID auxiliary lights. The conversions don't seem to work as well in incandescent reflectors.

I like the idea of the LED though and suspect like most things in a couple years the price will be reasonable. Anyone remember what CD players cost when they first appeared 20 some odd years ago?
