I am almost ready to start painting the frame, but not sure of its original color. Was it black or green?

This is one of those things that nobody really knows. We can all point to pictures of our frames that have bits of black paint on them. Yet, somebody else will show a picture of a frame with some green paint on it.
I personally think that the frames were painted black at the factory and then either left alone or painted green by the units that took delivery. But, that is just my opinion.
Do it the way you want and be happy with it. These trucks are rare enough that you can convince anybody that questions you that whatever why you go is correct.
Remember if you didn't build it you can't call it yours.

What Barrman said.
I'd add that of the trucks I have seen unrestored, some were OD, some were black and in the case of mine, it was black and had OD overspray all over it, while the inside of the frame rails was apparently unpainted toward the rear of the truck.

another agreement from me. i have been making some effort in certain areas to look stock, or at least make it hard to know any different when i do mods, but as barrman said, anyone who doesn't already know its not stock, probably doesn't know a thing about these trucks anyhow. for what its worth, my truck has a black frame. and the truck is stock paint with a NG repaint over it in places. i have no reason to believe that the frame was ever painted after it left the factory

I'll agree to all of the above with exception...
... is rust a color?
i guess i will go with black since the rust color just doesn't look right
Main problem we all have to remember is that these trucks were built by Jeep who's notoriuos for substituting things when they run out. I know we have beat this one to death many times. But there is no way to definately say that they were one way or another. They may have painted them black but ran short one day and painted a group of the green. Who knows? I do know that my trucks frame was painted green at the factory and then had a heavy black undercoat over it. When it was stripped, it went, overspray, black, od green, primer bare metal in that order. Others have found that thier frames were black over the primer. So what this means, is that if you want to restore yours to the way it was, you'll need to sand down a spot on the frame to see what the colors were.
P.S. I gladly pull out the pic of my frame that shows the green anytime anyone ever say that "there is no way it was green from the factory, all frames were black."

Well, I believe that there is not way it was green from the factory. All frames were black.
Thanks for posting Dave. I could not remember who had the factory green frame but knew we had pictures of at least one.
