Default Single speed PTO for LU4?

    Hello,
PTOs for NV4500s are hard to find, and I've been looking for one to power my stock winch. The problem is that it is not a reversible PTO. Can our winches be operated with a single speed PTO? Do they disengage well under load?

    Thanks,
    Mikel

The only way to operate the winch is engage the clutch at the winch. Then, get in and operate the PTO. Anything else will break things.

I also have a NV4500 and gave up trying to find a PTO of any kind. I got a divorced NP205 transfer case and a single speed pto for it. Transfer case in neutral and the transmission in forward or reverse takes care of the different directions and different speeds. Too bad I haven't installed it or a winch yet.

    Hello,
I've never operated a PTO winch, but I'm told that the reason for the reversible PTO is to give slack to the line. My thinking is that for this to happen:

    a) Engine has to be running
    b) By then you already have traction, which you can use to un-tension the line

Reverse would be way too slow to unwind the line, which is what the clutch is for.

    Mmmm...

The only problem is if you have tension and fail to get traction. You'll not have a good way to release the tension. I don't know if the clutch could be disengaged under load but it's unlikely.

A previous owner of my truck had it partially set up for a rear winch powered by the pto on the 205. He had a shaft going to a 1:1 reversible gear box. I think the plate said it was a Ramsey unit. I don't know if you'd have room for something like that up front though.

The PTO winches are a different animal than the electric ones most people have used. When you unlock the drum, it will spin. You might only need 50 feet, but you will get closer to 100 if you grab the end and start walking away from a free drum.

The LU4 is made so there is a friction pad up against the drum to keep it from free wheeling as I described above. It doesn't work. It is also made so the handle on the winch is to only be used when there is no tension on the line. It is a pretty small pin that holds the shift for to the shaft. Major pain to fix too.

I think the LU4 on the M715 is supposed to have 140 feet of cable. I know the Garwood on the M35 trucks has 200 feet. Having positive control of that much wire is a good thing.

Having the ability to release and feed out cable is good. Besides the self recovery or recovery operations most people think of. Consider a military medium tow bar held up by chains to the bed lifting hoods with a snack block in it. A perfect way to lift engines, pull post, lift axles and even ends of vehicles up.

Keep looking for a reversible PTO or a tcase with a pto or the pto box mentioned a post or two above. You will not like the results other wise and could even get hurt.

Does anyone know what model forward/reverse PTO would work with the NV4500? I am looking for one as well and haven't found one. All of the nv4500 pto's I have found are for running hydraulic pumps for dump trucks.

This is the first cheap NV4500 PTO that I run into.. I bought it for $200. Even expensive ones are extremely rare.

I know it's not optimal, but it's better than having an inoperable winch. We'll see how it works. Thank you guys.
