dual tanks

I'll be installing a rear tank from a full size van where the spare tire was originally mounted, and keeping the original tank also. I plan to connect the two with the valve and switch setup from an 84 chevy truck that had dual tanks. The subject came up right before the server wnet down and I'd like to know if anyone remembers the issue with the rear tank being higher than the front causing problems. There was a lot of talk about fuel draining to lower tank but I think all this was without the switchover valve. Does anyone know if the valve will positively prevent fuel draining? Or am I gonna need some sort of check valve also?
