The big issue for you will be your residence. California law gives you 10 days from the date you establish a residence (and they don't care if it's only temporary, as in going to college) to get a California drivers license and register your vehicles. Practically speaking, no one will care until you A) get stopped for a law violation or B) off one of your neighbors who's paying the ridiculous cost of California plates. A 1971 car won't be very high probably around $100 a year AND THE GOOD NEWS!!!! No annual smog inspections for 1973 or older. In years past, they would have charged you a $300 impact fee but after millions in collections, it was found to be illegal.
Hope you're ready to pay $2.50 a gallon for premium!
