Take the pump and box from a Full Size Jeep from 74 to 91...the box bolts on, the pump, if its a 230, you gotta make a mount for it.
The box is the same as the 70's and 80's GM car type...there is a box with a 76 on it that is said to be the best.

do you need to change the pitman arm when you go from manual to power steering
I used the pitman arm from the waggoneer the box came out of. I've been told it is a little too short as the turning radius is less than I think it should be, but I haven't bothered to verify this. Also, my truck has a chevy engine so I grabbed a chevy pump. The newer pumps have metric threads as opposed to the older pumps having standard. If you mix an older box with a newer pump or vice versa, you'll have to deal with adapters or custom hoses. It's easier and less costly to keep them the same so you can just find some regular production hoses that will fit. Just something to watch for.

What are some of the pitman arms that have been used on the J-series P/S box conversions?
Th stoc FSJ one works...there is a Ford one from the 80's that works...I think the application is in the archives...
There were some made by Leo Porter in Irving, Texas that were longer to give back that extra big of turning...I dont know that he is in business anymore though.

My steering box was a "76" box and came off of an early 80's Wagoneer. I used the pitman arm that was on it, and it worked perfectly with the stock suspension height and it still turns from lock to lock no problem.

Randy, I used the same get up. Are the wheels turning all the way to the stops when you mention turning lock to lock? My problem is that the turning radius is huge now. It makes sense that the gearbox could be at the lock position but too short of an arm wouldn't aloow for the wheels to be fully turned.
The right knuckle misses the actual stop bolt by a smidge, but I need to adjust it. Its only been 3 years. The drivers side does go all the way to the stop on the knuckle.
