In the M715 setup, the axle turns because it is connected by the drive flange to the hub...the hub obviously is turning when the wheel is turning....so, stock, anytime the wheel turns the axle turns.
The lockout hub disengages the splines in, basically what is the new drive hub, from the axle with a spring. Thus the axle does not turn when the hub and wheel turn.
i wouldnt want to run one without the axle end supported by one of these...maybe for a short distance at low speed it might work, but for miles especially at road speeds, not a good idea...
