Thread: Title question

  1. #1

    Default Title question

Was wondering how others have handled this.

The truck is a long term project, so won’t be drivable for at least a year.

I’m in Texas and wondering how to go about getting a title from a bill of sale.

Is this something most do when the project is started or after it is ready to start driving?

Whatever you do title it as a jeep gladiator. Do Not title as an M715. Even if Texas does allow military vehicle on the roads not all states do. If you move or try to sell you could be screwing yourself.

A bill of sale is not recognized in Texas. That leaves you doing a bonded title or using one of the title services to get a title which Texas requires. You could maybe do the Vermont option but I have never tried that personally. Bonded title or title service will probably run $500-$1000 either way you go.

Texas does have the former military vehicle option for tags. It is under the Antique car registration and a bumper number can be your license plate with no inspection. $62 every 5 years. I suggest either FMV or antique just to avoid the inspection and the cheaper yearly fee.
Remember if you didn't build it you can't call it yours.

I got a bonded Texas title about 3 years ago. At time the min. bond amount was $4,000
It cost an even 200.00 for the bond and I got it from my auto insurance agent. Go to the local auto registration place and pick up the forms, fill them out and give them to your insurance guy. It took about 6 weeks to get the title from the state......Al

So, officially think a bonded title is a bureaucratic nightmare. Pretty sure I have it all lined out and then talked to a lady today who said I had to get it inspected and have another form filled out. Problem is it’s in pieces and not moving out of my garage for at least a year.

Guess I’ll send it out and hope for the best!

If you register it as a former military vehicle or antique. Then the inspection part is not required. The local tax office doesn’t know this and will have to call Austin to be told they are wrong and you are correct.

    Patience is required.

Here's a link to the VT process from a skoolie website. Lots of them use VT when they first get their bus and then transfer to their state when their build is completed. All the info is on the first page or two and they update it periodically.
