    Default Brake Parts Needed

    I know I'm probably just being lazy again, but I need to do some shopping and don't want to spend a week chasing down and rooting around for the best deals. If I may, I'd like to borrow again from the vast knowledge base of you fellow zoners. Thanks in advance.

    I need the cheapest and most readily available source for the following:

    8 New Brake shoes
    4 new wheel brake cylinders
    one set of 3 braided brake line hoses
    one set of 4 Michelin xl's or xzl's (80% or better)

    I know it's alot of trouble but I'm ready to "drop some coin" this week. I sold one of my zero turn mowers and have a sudden influx of cash that's not spoken for. And I need to get all this stuff rounded up and installed before it gets cold here in the next few weeks.
    If you could, could you throw out some part numbers and prices you last paid for this stuff too?
    Thanks y'all, any help will save me countless hours of phone calls and searching around.

    Braided lines:

    I just bought one of these 12" with 90 degree end hoses and was very pleased for the $14 price. Whenever I can in the future, this is the route I will take. You also need adapters to fit to the wheel cylinders and hard line but they run a few bucks a piece.

    I used the AN-3 size (3/16") but if I remember correctly, our trucks use 1/4" line which would work with AN-4 stuff.

    In comparison I had a local hose shop make up the 3 braided lines for my truck and paid $100 - I could have done most of it myself but two ends required silver soldering and I wasn't comfortable doing that. On that note, the front wheel cylinders may give you clearance troubles and that's why I had the little short hardline nipples from the OEM brake hoses silver soldered into an AN fitting that the braided hose could attach to. Check your clearance there before laying out too much cash.

    Brake Booster Frame Mounted
    the frame mounted brake booser is: 51-8013 it costs about $135 and works great, lots of stopping power to stop the deuce axles.

    Brake Booster Mounting Bracket
    The adapter is about 3" thick and tapered such that it angles the booster and master cyl. upward slightly. I had to buy this part from a Jeep dealer. I think the part #
    is J5359059, cost is about $25.

    Brake Wheel Cylinder

    Wheel cyl required very slight enlarging of bolt holes in the backing plates and where a car quest Bravo # 1052 and 1051 one right and one left. Also use a 3/16
    fitting not 1/4 like the truck lines, needs a little adapter, no biggie. (this info I got from the FAQ here but can say that it works great!)

    cast into these cylinders, depending on the side (left or right wheel cylinder). The bore size (1 1/16) is also cast into the cylinders.

    I used the rear wheel cylinders from a '93 E-250 Ford van on my m715. The only thing I needed to do was open the mounting holes a bit. The brake line bolted
    right up. They're even the correct bore size.

    One others post I seen listed that they got their kits at autozone and the brand was Brakeware UPC 82702 90661, P/N 66821. The Wagner rebuild kit is #F3609,
    this kit does NOT include the pistons. I priced the Wagner stainless steel pistons and they were about $45.00 EACH

    For you folks that had trouble with the boots slipping off your wheel cylinders:
    Wagner rebuild kit #F3609 contains a much better boot, Wagner #FC-14492. The original boot, Wagner #FC-2937, is a stiffer design and obviously, can get
    pushed off . The kit also contains updated piston seals and springs.

    Brake Light Switch
    I used an old plunger stoplight switch and mounted it on a bracket then used a 2in. exhaust clamp to mount the whole mess to the steering column.

    I also checked on brake light switches that mount near the pedal instead of the pressure switch we currently use, stock. The civilian trucks used a pressure switch
    until 74 or 75 when the newer type took over. The simplest one appears to be, Wells part number, DR496. This is essentially a straight tube about 3 to 4 inches

    Brake Lining
    Grab your yellow pages and find out who is doing brake service for the medium to heavy duty truck market in your city. You should be able to get your relines done
    with no problem.

    I haven't had much luck with the NOS Military lining. The mud and silt seem to just chew it right up. I have been getting shoes relined with a semi metalic aftermarket
    lining. This seems to hold up better and they work better when wet. This costs me $45 for 4 shoes plus shipping.

    You can order brake linings from Front Line. These are the original linings, they come with everyhting you need, linings and rivets. I have used these and seem to
    work fine. Had a local brake shop rivet them together for me. Cost was 10$ for a complete set.

    Memphis has shoes for $20.00 each (yes, EACH, that's $80.00/axle). Or, if you have access to a good shop, they sell linings for $10.00/shoe. My shop quoted me
    $10.00/shoe to rivet new linings on, so I took the "no downtime" route and got the shoes. Be ready for core charge, though!

    i used the shoes for a j4000(13x21/2) big a part#2-60r they are the same except in two areas. #1 you will have to lose the trapezoid block and #2 you will have to
    get new return springs or bend one end of your old ones 90 degrees. when you get them on you will see what i'm talking about.

    These shoes at Advance Auto Parts were about $58.00 for ALL 4 wheels, compared to $200 that a local shop wanted to re-line the old ones!! Plus they are easy
    to find if they need to be done again due to dirt getting in there etc. the part # was FR320 (all around)

    The chevy 76 3/4 ton shoes dont work on the front. the jeep gladiator factory hd dually 8000 gvw REAR shoes do.. sorry to confuse an already confused issue

    Master Cylinder
    found a master cylinder that bolts in place and has a little more capaticy than the cj-5. keep in mind if your still using an all drum set up the wheel cylinders don't need
    near as much fluid movement when compared to discs. the master cylinder i found is a 10-1511, that is an A1 cardone #. that's just i'm running, not saying it's better
    just another option.

    The master cylinder: 10-4000 (napa- remanufactured by Cardone) about $30.00 as I had no core... It's from a j-series dually, with a slightly larger resevoir. It bolts
    directly on, and you can either replace the line leading to the j-block, or bend it slightly to meet the different port on the new MC.

    According to our brake system cross reference the Napa Wagner # 36833 thats for the master cylinder itself . The parts store should beable to get the rebuild kit

    Master Cylinder: Wagner #F66857, used on GM P30/P35 series trucks prior to 1972. Use the secondary to drive the front brakes, it's the piston nearest firewall.
    All you need is reducers to adapt the larger outlets on the unit to your brake line size, about a buck each.

    I used a master cyl. off a 80' cj-5 and it works fine . I also used the proportioning valve off the same and had trouble with it . i don't know if the valve was messed
    up or what but i could not get even pressure to the wheel cyls. so i used a splitter off a 70' ford truck and it works fine now.

    Napa has the stock masters in their catalogs with a picture. It fits the 66 J series trucks. I dont have the part number, sorry.

    101749 at Advanced Auto Parts. It's for a '77 Corvette, NON power. On my truck, I bolted it directly up to a Gladiator (delco) booster and works great. The non
    power master has a larger piston than the power master...that was enough for me.

    Parking Brake in Rear Drums
    As far as putting the parking brake in the rear drum AND getting auto adjusters AND getting semi-mettalic shoes to boot, there is a swap that has been done on the
    rear that accomplishes all three. Basically you need the backing plates and brake stuff, except the drum, off a corporate 14 bolt GM axle with 13 inch drums. Redrill
    the bolt pattern and cut out the center hole a little in the backing plate and they go on the rear and use the stock M715 drum.

    Parking Brake Disc
    Try Jesse who owns High Angle Driveline. He makes a emergency brake kit to mount a small disc & cable operated caliper for 205's. It mounts to the rear output
    behind the yoke. About 300 clams which for you is pure pocket change.

    you could use a emergency brake caliper off of a Subaru, hook it to the original handle and and have a mechanical brake.
    All Pro Offroad makes a setup like this for Toyotas. You might check their web site at www.allprooffroad.com to seeif they have any pictures that might help you to

    Power Brakes
    After spending over 12 hours in Willy's M715 going to get the CUCV, I have to tell you I have never been so impressed with a truck. The stock drum brakes with
    semi-metallic brake linings, a J-20 booster and a Hummer master cylinder worked great in the hills in West Texas and at highway speeds towing the CUCV. He
    could basically throw me through the windshield if he wanted to.

    Rear Disc Brake Conversion
    I used 3/4 ton caliper brackets from the front of a 75 chevy 4 wheel drive 1/2 ton calipers from the same year, i used 1 ton front rotors from a chevy 4wheel drive, i
    made an adapter to mount the rotor to my stock hub it was basically a 3/8 in inch steel with both bolt patterns I used 9/16 trailer studs for the six lugs and
    countersunk the heads and used 11/16 countersunk bolts on the 8 lugs side. I had to machine seventy thousandths off the thickness of each side of the rotor for the
    halfton caliphers and brakets to fit and one hundred and forty thousandths of the circumference of the rotor if i had to do it over i would have bought the three
    quarter ton rotors at the local part store because they are already the right thickness and circumference but i already had the one tons they were free... as for
    mounting the bracket the inside diameter is three inches one hundred thousandths and the axel tube at the mounting point is three inches you could make and adapter
    to mount to the stock four bolt flange but i positioned my brackets to the right location and tig welded them.

    Just some added info, I got done replacing all 4 of my wheel cylinders a few weeks ago. Obviously you will need 2 of the one type and 2 of the other type, but for anyone who needs to know specifically, here is the left and ride side numbers.

    Drivers Side: 37263
    Passengers Side: 37262

    I picked these up at Napa about a month ago, they were $17.87 a peice.

    You can use the brake cylinders off of a 93 ford F-350 just take a dremil tool to the backing plate.Enlarge the bolt holes.Very little trimming.

    I think that is the right year.

    I have an extra set of 4 brake shoes and a couple of wheel cyl rebuild kits that I bought from AB Linn. I paid 85$ plus shipping for the brake shoes and $9 for the wheel cyl kits. If you cant find anything close or reasonable I would sell my extra set to you.

    RE shoes, get em re-lined locally. I heard of a place that sent their guy to talk to Ford model T owners about shoes. I figured he knew a thing or two about old iron <g> and I had all four corners redone for about $120, including shipping back to me. This was about 3-4 years ago.

    Are you sure you need new brake shoes? Try Frontline MV's. He had them about 6 months ago. You can get brake cylinders from AB Linn (unless he's still ed at you). Or use the F350 stuff if you are not worried about keeping it stock. AB also has the brake lines. As well as Memphis, VPW, etc.

    There is a post in there about relining your own shoes using linings from Midway and a tool from Aircraft Spruce. I went this route and don't recommend it unless the absolute bottom dollar is the way you have to go and you have plenty of time. If you are considering this route, PM me for more info. It can work, but there are some pitfalls.

    If you live in a town large enough to have a brake house, having your shoes relined is the best way to go. I had this done on one of my other trucks and it came out great. In fact, they even made me some oversize shoes for one of the drums that was a little oversize.
