Thread: Questions about Diesel Swap for M715

Default Questions about Diesel Swap for M715

I have a '68 M715 with an engine that's pretty much shot. I'd like to swap it out for a diesel. I know it has been done before, but does anybody have any tips or suggestions. What engine to use? What are the pitfalls of this sort of swap? What sort of expense are we talking about? I'm fairly handy with a wrench, and have a mechanic for a brother.

    Thanks...

    Jon

You will find a ton of information about this here in the Modified forum. Poke around for a while to learn what you can. Look for a very long thread titled "diesel m715" for starts....

I think the easiest route to go will be the chevy 6.2 and a 2 wheel drive 465 trans.

I will second what Chris wrote and add this. Any GM engine (gas V8 or I6, 6.2 or 6.5) with its stock 2wd transmission attached. Don't go for the Duramax since it needs more front area than the entire truck just about for the intercooler.
Remember if you didn't build it you can't call it yours.

    6.2 powered M715, 5 M1009's, M416, 2 M101's, 2 M105's, 3 M35's, M1007 6.5 turbo Suburban project called Cowdog.

Yeah, we had one member who tried to do a Duramax, but the stress was more than he could handle. He doesn't come around too much anymore, but that might be because she cut "them" off.

After he chickened out on the Duramax swap, he took up knitting or quilting or something, didn't he?

I agree in the GM 6.2/6.5 engine swap. Another popular swap is to get a Cummins 4BT and transmission out of a deliver truck (sometimes called a bread truck, frito lays truck etc.) Some have attempted a 6BT out of a Dodge, but I think a shoe horn is needed to make it fit.

No matter what engine you go with you will have to do some head scratching and some configering of engine mounts placement ect.

Gotta agree there. (about both) I am in the process of a BB Chevy swap and it costs more and is a bit more difficult. If I hadn't already had the 396, I would have gone Diesel. That will be next time though, and yes, there will be a next time....

Got my eye on a nearly free Ford 7.3

i agree with the 6.2 or 6.5. I will be attempting a 6bt swap when i get back to the states but I might end up with a cylinder or two sitting in my lap. 4BT's are nice and you can get good power and mileage out of them but they are pricey. The cheapest complete running one that i have seen went for 2,300!!
