I'm thinking of going with the 700r4 in my truck and I'll need a shifter. I've been looking on line at the Lokar shifters. Does anyone else have experience with other brands? Anything to watch out for?

I had a Gennie shifter on a Ford Cruise-O-Matic some time ago. Gennie is pretty dang near similar to the Lokar stuff. My suggestion is to keep the shifter stalk short. My extra long, peek over the dash of my F-100 shifter had too much leverage against the mild steel shift gate mechanism and eventually wore it out after a few years of flopping around up there.

there are some custom made shifters usauly on ebay they are for demolition derby cars,they are simple, strong,and reliable 50 to 75$
I am in the process of putting a 700r4 in my truck. I went with the lokar shifter because it is so adjustable. I was able to get it located so it goes almost exactly in the center of the stock opening. It is pricey though. I bought mine on ebay.
I actually bought a Lokar for my truck, but took it back when several other people I know showed me problems they develop over time (essentially the lockout buttons get sticky and they get sloppy).
I found the Art Carr shifters... Dirt-simple, easy to mount in a number of different ways, and they have a proven record in harsh enbironments like our trucks. Also found another VERY close design from Winters.
They have several other advantages:
Mount in a number of ways.
Have a lockout so my wife doesn't accidently throw it in reverse.
Comfortable height to shift.

I've since cleaned upi the install, but essentially I put in some 3/4" stand-offs and welded the sleeves through the tranny cover, tack-welding the nuts to the bottom so it has a nice clean/flat surface to mount on.

That Art Carr shifter looks a whole lot like an Allison shifter from any medium duty truck.
