    Default Dana 70 gears

curious if someone can offer me a bit of insight.
i have recently bought a set of 4.56 gears from randys ring and pinion. told them i had a m715 (don't think he knew what i was talkin about) but he said he could get me gears for the dana 70 and dana 60...

    make a long story longer.

i am setting up the rear and the backlash is very tight near nothing with no shims on the ring side.

what i wanna know is are there "special" gears for the m715 dana 70.?

    or

do all dana 70 gears work in our trucks>?

i dont wanna be spinning my wheels if i already have the wrong parts.

    thanks.

I knw there are different offsets on the ring gear on the D70 so later and earlier stuff doesnt interchange...

by "off set" do you mean the thickness of the ring gear is different?

becuase the one tthey sent me matched up with the carrier. i didn't think about mesuring the thickness of it....
i do know the pinion they sent me is wider across the face then the old one.

    There is pinion offset:

    Pinion Offsets

There are three pinion offsets for the Dana 70 rear axle. 1/2 inch, 5/8 inch and 31/32 inch offset. The first Dana 70 axles had a 1/2 pinion offset and were found in Dana 70HD's as well. The drawback with the 1/2 inch offset was that a 4.10:1 gear ratio was the highest gear set possible. In the 1970's the 1/2 inch offset was phased out for a 5/8 inch offset that allowed for higher gearing. The 5/8 offset was used in all the major variations of the Dana 70 and is still being used today. A 31/32 inch offset was used for a short time in the late 1980's to the early 1990's to allow even higher gears than the 5/8 offset could offer. Only the Dana 70U and Dana 70HD used the 31/32 inch offset.

so then what offset would we have in our trucks?

since the 1/2 off set was only capable of a 4.10:1
and it was phased out in the 70's
and our trucks were built in late 60's
    do we have the 5/8?

the numbers on the gears are ..
    rear dana 70
    ring gear "L5 YG 34842 304"
    pinion gear "3.504"

    front dana 60
    ring gear "G7 D60-456 9X41"
    pinon gear "3.130"

so far i have not tried to install the front gears.
just been hung up on the rear ones.

...would it be wise to just take the ring gear to a machine shop and have them take down some material so when it bolts to the case it would be a little farther from the pinion....

kind of is lame that i spent all this money on these gears and they don't seem to be workin out at all..

i had the same problem and learned the hard way. I had some 4.88 gears out of a late 70s dana 70, when i set them up i was .125 off. I ended up buying different gears. If i remember correctly, my 715 to had 1/2" offset and the later one has 5/8" offset. i wanted to go with 5.13 anyway.
