    Default wrecker : dual tanks

    dual tanks
Post by wrecker on May 18, 2006, 8:55am

I'll be installing a rear tank from a full size van where the spare tire was originally mounted, and keeping the original tank also. I plan to connect the two with the valve and switch setup from an 84 chevy truck that had dual tanks. The subject came up right before the server wnet down and I'd like to know if anyone remembers the issue with the rear tank being higher than the front causing problems. There was a lot of talk about fuel draining to lower tank but I think all this was without the switchover valve. Does anyone know if the valve will positively prevent fuel draining? Or am I gonna need some sort of check valve also?

I think it would be perfect if the aux tank was higher than the stock tank. Then you need only connect the two with a fuel flow line out of the lower portion of the aux tank and a breather connecting the two near the top. As you pulled fuel out of the stock tank, it would also pull out of the aux tank and the fuel level indicator would be accurate-plus! Then when the aux tank ran out, you'd only be pulling from the stock tank and the level indicator would let you know when it was close to empty. Fill-up would fill both tanks from the stock filler neck.

Why not, eh? KISS and everything.....

The problems were due to the lack of a switchover valve...you should be fine.

Tim, I already have all the stuff for free, so I was planning on using the switchover setup to know when I was empty in each tank and mainly because I have to have my stock tank relined, resealed, and a new sender installed. With the swithover valve, I can isolate each tank and repair the other if needed. I do appreciate the feedback though.

I was just thinking out loud is all! I had the same switchover setup in my '83 Chevy p/u and really liked it.

That ability to cut one tank off in case of a problem or maintenance makes that switch worth it right there...to me anyway...that is a good point.
