    Time for USMC stencils
    Post by binfordm715 on Aug 24, 2006, 2:35pm

I'm going with stencils since A) my hood will be replaced in the not-too-distant future and B) I like the stencil look better!

Being USMC green, I'm going with the USMC stencils. Already picked my hood numbers: USMC 42908 (the numbers are the license plate number of the Collector Vehicle plate I got for it).

    Questions:

    1) Single line on each side of the hood?

    for instance:

    USMC 42908

    as opposed to:

    USMC
    42908

    2) Semi-gloss yellow? (Any source for a near-correct shade in semi-gloss?)

    3) Same "USMC 42908" on the tailgate under the "JeeP" right?

    4) What do USMC trucks of this era have on their front bumpers/rear bumperettes?

    5) What other markings do USMC trucks have? (TP? Gas filler warnings, etc.?)

Know any source of pics I could look at that are known to be fairly correct?

    Thanks!

The army stencil are two lined. I don't know about the Marine version. As far as pic go of a Marine version 715.... i think they're extremely rare. So rare , ive never seen one.

My truck has the correct markings on it. the USMC and ht enumbers are single lined. Also the Marines used 6 numbers at that time. 5 numbers were used during Korea. Beast makes all the stencils for $25. That includes the front bumper, bumperettes, hood, tire pressure, and filler caution. I will send you some more pictures of my truck when I get home.

You can also see more pictures on beast's (David Allen) web site.

Already talked with Beast. He says he's been doing the stickers since the stencils are a PITA. I'd like to just paint the stuff on since I'll be (hopefully) replacing the hood anyway. Besides, there's just something oh-so "military" about stenciled numbers!

I remember you told me about the 6 digits, but I'm going to stick with the 5 that are on my license plate 'cause after all, I'm just a dork and everything....

Looking forward to more of your pics! I don't recall seeing it since you put the bumper numbers on and don't think I ever saw a rear-view.

So, what are the height of the stickers then, so I can see about getting some stencils.

And Sally....were those stencils reusable? I'd hate to get stencils instead of stickers because of replacing my hood, only to find they're only one-time-use stencils!

If you look for pics of Lee's old truck, it also had Marine markings. I believe they were stenciled by the look of them. There are a few outfits on the net that do custom stencils for MVs.

Yep, Porkchop's are decals, not stencils. I can be forced to make stencils, but they are a pain. The stencils are usually a one time shot. Rick Larson has reusable oil boards if you want to be able to do it twice. Hood # are 3" front bumper are 4", tailgate 1.5" TP & cautions are 1"

Your going to laugh but traffic marking paint. The rattle cans that you can use to put lines in the parkinglot. The color is just about perfect. The hard part is holding the can (upside down) to paint.

The color that is a dead on match is hobby paint yellow. The kind you can find at the hobby store.

That would be easier than holding and upside down traffic marking can...
