    Door Hinges
Post by davenjeip on Jun 2, 2006, 5:54pm

The drivers side door hinges on my truck are tweaked and need replaced.

If I understand correctly, any FSJ hinges will work but they do not open as far as the 715 ones do. I can pick up a set from a full size locally for $20, but wasn't sure if that's what I wanted to do.

How big of a difference is there in the amount the doors will open?

Are there any good sources to purchase stock hinges?

There are no sources for new hinges. FSJ doors open pretty dang far... not sure how much of a difference there is, or if it matters much.... I'll have to compare the two when I get home.....

I'd just get the FSJ hinges. It might be a difference of like 90* for the stock hinges vs 85* for the FSJ hinges LOL They really do open pretty far.

I think the older, pre74 FSJ hinges are the same or real close and the later are lesser in the degree department...though its not a huge difference or a restrictive one...

Jon, you're correct. The older ones will go pretty close to 90 degrees. Check out my website and look at my civvy door installation. IIRC, there's a pic of the door hinge difference. It was changed when they added power windows. The old style hinge doesn't seem to have enough room for all the wires to get past it.
    Here's a direct link:

Scroll down and you'll see the two hinges opened up side by side.

Also, it helps to have a second person when hanging a door. Not required, but it makes life easier, and isn't that what it's all about?

Ditto on the helper for hanging them. The doors are... cumbersome.

    Thanks for the help.

I just picked up the truck and the guy threw in a FSJ door with the truck and it still has the hinges mounted on it. After a quick comparison they look to be identical.

The door is bent up a little more than I had realized, so I don't know if it'll be worth saving. I figure that I'll swap over the hinges and get an idea of how it's working before I decide what to do.

For no good reason, I'd like to keep the original door but it may not be worth the effort. Either way, it looks like I should be able to make something work without too much trouble.

FSJ hinges changed in 1980. Any 79' or older hinges will open the full 90 compaired to the newer ones.

If you have a good civvy door and you looked at my link, you already know what to do with that civvy FSJ door.
