    Welcome. Kingston in upstate NY?

You are probably better off swapping everything (engine/trans/tc). I'm assuming your 5 speed transmission has an OD 5th gear, which will greatly help you.

I go by quite often. A friend has a cabin near Margaretville.

If you search this site, you will find tons and tons of SBC swap threads.

I'm assuming that you are talking about using a attached transfer case like a NP208 or later? If so you may have a problem with the need for a PTO for the winch. If you are using one with a NP205 then you shouldn't have any problem with the PTO. But yes swap the engine, trans and transfer case is better than adapting to the stock transmission. It should be a fairly straight forward swap. Just may have to make new or relocate the transmission mount.
