    Power steering hoses,
Post by airborne on Jun 28, 2006, 5:52pm

Anyone know a part # for ps hoses for an 76 box off a fsj, with the 'caned ham' pump they are 'O' ring style. I looked in a NAPA ps book today for over an hour and still didn't come up with anything that looked like it will fit. The book says they are 16mm and 18mm male ends. I need something about 30- -35" long. Also there is that brace that runs right across the top of the box between the frame and front cross member. So the hose must have a tight 90 right out of the box. I mounted the pump over the Alt, if that helps any. The donor jeep was I think an 80s fsj. Thanks All.

I just got a 90* adapter at Napa for mine and used the standard Jeep J-10 hose. Mine came from a '79, and I know they changed a couple of things in '80, but the J-10 hose should work.

Is the 90 a 'o' ring to flair fitting? I just didn't want to have to have a custom hose made up is all. I tell you this just keeps getting gooder and gooder! Anyone else ? Thanks.

You can remove the O-ring style fitting at the back of the pump and replace it with the earlier flared style fitting. Seems the easiest route to me to avoid custom hoses. Just takes a 1" wrench - watch for the spring behind the fitting, it may wanna jump out at you.

OK. I looked at the back of the pump and see the fitting, but isn't it tacked to the pump housing? Both ends of my hose is set up for 'O' rings,if I can just unscrew the nut in the back of the pump, what about the box?

The steering box is flare style right? That's the impression I got and why I suggested changing the pump fitting. You need to get all the fittings to match, either O-ring or flare and buy hoses to suit.

The fitting should just be screwed into the pump housing. If the pump is used, it's a good idea to change the O-ring on the fitting (I just had to do that the other day for Frapguy), it's 3/4 OD, 9/16 ID with a material diameter of 3/32.

Like mentioned, you can find tight 90 fittings for the steering box. A good parts house will have them with the brake and fuel fittings. I know I've seen them for flared fittings, probaly have them from O-ring style too but I doubt they have conversion style.

No the box is 'O' ring also. The book calls for 16 or 18 mm ends, but like I said I'm NOT having fun trying to match it up. I need it about 31" long, tight 90 out of the box, and a 90 out of the pump, but I'm thinking I can work with that end. Thanks.

The high pressure hose changed fittings almost from year to year, it seems. It'd check from 75-79 and then 80-85 and then 86-91's. Did the box and pump housing come from the same Jeep? If so, you have a better chance that they are matched.

You can remove the pump fitting and just bring that it and match the hose end to it.

Just spent another 3hrs trying to match the hose with no luck. I looked through the gates catalog, found about 6 hoses that should fit,but no one can tell me if the tight 90/18mm nut is on the pump end. Next stop 'custom hoses'. Thanks all!
