Wiper Motor Grommet

Forgot about the grommet that goes into the windshield frame for the wiper shaft to go though. Mounting all that stuff today and no grommet I have in my array will fit. What replacement are you folks using?

I just took a wiper motor to the auto parts store and looked around the "help" shelf. That was like 7 years ago, so I don't remember any part numbers.

The gromet cuts down on cold wind coming in, but water still comes through in dribs and splats.

I used NAPA. They had various different grommets in the Belden electrical line of parts. I measured the windshield frame and wiper shaft then looked through the catalog.

Like Tim mentioned, it won't keep out all the water, but it helps.

Checked with my industrial suppliers and found MSC 32828873 grommets. They fit the windshield hole with a few thousands clearance. However, they do not seal tight against the wiper shaft. I had to buy 25 in a pack at $.15 each. Anyone wants some, I can mail them.

There is another one, MSC 32828832 that is the same size for the windshield hole and would seal around the shaft, .380", making it water tight. You must order 100 and they cost about $.25 each so I did not go that route. Don't need 98 extra grommets!

I smeared a little Vaseline around my wiper shafts where they pass through the grommets. I have never seen water leak through them. Plenty of other places though....

Clear RTV applied sparsely in the bottom of the groove for the OD and fill the gap between the shaft and grommet with a very thin bead. A single careful swipe with a finger or a backwards spinning Q-tip pushes the sealant into the groove bonding better and leaves a clean looking seal.
I have used a big syringe with out the needle and it gives more control. It trashes the syringe though.

I think one could find a better Grommet that would not need sealant. Getting that stuff on neatly is a pain.

This place makes a CJ cowl seal that may be a good hard rubber unlike the poor quality spongy ones out there from the mainstream suppliers. I have not called on it yet for a durometer rating.

As mentioned above, the MSC 32828832 would be a near perfect fit with sealing assured. Problem is having to buy 100. Find 50 guys who need some?

Hmmmm.... CJ5 & CJ6 from 1951 thru 1975. I wasn't aware of any changes in the windshield area from '75 through '86. When did the windshield wiper motor move to the inside? That was '75, wasn't it? Or '76? If '76, then that's why the cowl seal is through '75. In which case, it won't work for the latter model years.

I got some random ones at the hardware store, and doubled them up, with an extra one just sitting on the shaft behind the one actually in the frame... The hope is that since this one is squashed flat, and exerts lots of force on the one in the hole, everything will seal. The reality will be discovered when we get the top back on...
