    Default Ignition question

    Hello,

Can someone tell us where the ignition switch is? We have everything working but there is no spark to the plugs (which are new). The distributer seems to be ok, the point gap seems correct.

Is the coil built into the the distrubuter, we cannot find the coil.

    Thanks!

As for the ignition switch, I assume you mean the On/Off switch located about where a regular key switch would be located. For all intents and purposes it acts as an ignition switch.
The coil IS located down inside the distributor body. And the coil is notorious for burning out if you leave the On/Off switch on after shutdown. You can get a new one on ebay for about 35.00.

I should've added that you can remove the coil by removing the distributor cap and unscrewing the baseplate under the points. You will see the coil sitting upright connected by two wires.

The power to the ignition flows from the On/Off switch on the dash...so instead of a key switch, its just a lever switch.

The distributor and coil share a common housing. This unit is called an Ignitor and the housing holding both is called the Ignitor Housing. Unscrew the lid off the ignitor housing and one finds the coil toward the rear and the distributor toward the front. The distributor cap screws up to the underside of the ignitor housing lid.

The coil could be bad...common problem really...as was said, leaving the on/off switch on can burn the coil up. To test the coil:

Check ignition coil primary winding resistance. Set ohmmeter on 10 ohm full scale range. Connect probes to positive and negative terminals of coil. Primary resistance should be 4.26. 4.9 ohms. If ohmmeter indicates 0 ohms or infinite resistance, replace coil. Check secondary resistance from coil primary terminal to tower Resistance must be from 12090 to 13910 ohms.
