Default How to prevent a cracked exhaust manifold

This was all figured out and written up by Kaiserjeeps and saved from loss by amphi when the crash happened. It is a great article!

Wow, memories... Jon your title says how to repair a cracked manifold. My write up is a detail on a non cracked replacement to keep it from cracking.

But then again you did state how to fix a cracked manifold. Replace it! ha ha ha.

I am still running the same set up. I have had not 1 problem. No cracks leaks or blemishes from the POR 15 coating. Still looks great. So the POR 15 product passes in my book. I also just did some motor work on the duece. I blasted and painted the exhaust manifold on the duece motor and it is also working great. I'm sure with it all looking so good I've got to be getting better MPG right?

Just a long term follow up. I was looking my engine over with my new bosses yesterday and noticed that my POR15 coating looks like it's starting to flake in some spots. I know the prep work was good so it looks like POR 15 may not be the shizzle. I have not flicked the flake off yet to see if its raw cast under it. Possible a second brush stroke after it started to skin over when I was redoing it. I'll have to look a little closer. If it were a show car this would be unacceptable as a finish product.

My Por 15 seems to be coming off already, 7 hours run time on my exhaust manifolds. There must be something better.

I've yet to find much that is brush or spray application that lasts long on the manifold. Particularly so when they get wet while hot.

POR is about the most durable if the manifold is prepped well.

Jet coating or ceramic coating is the only method I have used that stays put.

Jet coating is actually molten aluminum that is sprayed onto the manifold.

The best I have found is Krylon's BBQ and Stove Black. It looks good again, until it gets wet while its hot, like when you drive in the rain, then it turns gray and comes off. We've used it a quite a lot on motorcycle exhaust systems and expansion chambers.

The 1200 degree claim I think is more of a selling point than anything.

Well, the thing is, its cheap enough, that you can keep reappying it.....POR is about $20-$30 a can or more for the brush-on stuff.
