Changing a Fuel Pump
Post by agengr on Oct 22, 2006, 5:00pm This Friday, I plan to swap the stock mechanical fuel pump on my truck with one from a spare engine. I've looked through the manuals and found some diagrams but no instructions on the removal of it and how to put it back on. I am not so sure how the pump is driven by the engine, so my question is: Is this a fairly simple bolt off/bolt back on procedure or are there tricks and little things to watch out for? |

Post by robertcowan on Oct 22, 2006, 5:44pm UNHOOK ALL THE LINES AND IF YOU CANT REBEMBER WHERE THEY GO MARK THEY OR TAKE PICTURES, TAKE THE 2 NUTS OFF HOLDING ON THE FUEL PUMP , IT MIGHT BE STUCK SLIGHTLY FROM GASKET SEALER, GENTLY TAP IT WITH RUBBER HAMMER OR SIMMILAR ITEM, REOMVE PUMP STRAIGHT OUT, CLEAN GASKET SURFACE GOOD, INSTALL NEW GASKET WITH SEALER ( THIN COAT ON BOTH SIDES ) INSTALL PUMP STRAIGHT IN , IT MIGHT GO A LITTLE HARD THE LAST 1/2" IF THE FUEL PUMP CENTRIC IS IN THE PUMPING MODE. JUST PUSH IT ALL THE WAY STRAIGHT IN, HOLD IT IN AND INSTALL THE WASHERS, & NUTS. TIGHTEN IT DOWN ( NOT LIKE A GORILLA ) HOOK BACK UP THE LINES ( USE WD40 ON THE CONNECTORE IF NOT REAL FREE ). CHANGE FUEL FILTER. CRANK ENGINE. BOB |

Post by barrman on Oct 23, 2006, 8:17am Joseph, 3M weather stripping is great for this kind of use. This is the yellow or black stuff in the red and white tubes. Glue the gasket to the pump first. Then put another bead on the engine side of the gasket. The stuff is really sticky, so be carefull or wear latex gloves. |
