Thread: Engine swap.

  1. #1

    Default Engine swap.

I am looking to put a Chevy motor on am M715. It will be used here in alaska for hunting. I need to install an engine that will have lots of low end torque. We ride for days in granny gear. Any suggestions??????

Cummins 4bt. Lots of torque and good fuel economy.

    Chevy 383 stroker
    Chevy 454

Are you going to change out the axles or keep the stock axles.
What tranny are you going to use?

I would like to keep the stock tranny. I am also leaving the stock axels with a detroit locker on the rear.

Most of the people here in alaska run the ford 302, Because of the fuel economy and reliability.

Just out of curiosity, what is wrong with your stock 230 engine? If you want low end torque, and are going to be driving in granny all day (not sure if the rest of your drivetrain is stock or not), that screams stock 230 to me. I love my 230 engine, something like 210 ft-lbs in the low end if I recall right. In fact, I'm going to run my 230 till it dies. Granted I've done a few mods to the engine and my 715 as a whole, but still, the 230 is a good engine. People just need to understand that they can't push it past 3k while doing 65 on the freeway in stock condition.

Now, if your 715 is in a situation where it currently has no engine, or your 230 has died, etc., then disregard the above text, put a good modern engine in it.

I got my info from: http://www.jeeptech.com/engine/tornado230.html . Ours is the 8.5:1 compression isn't it? Is there a HP/Torque listing in the military manuals?

The mil engines are all 7.5:1 compression and 1 barrels.

This chart pretty much says it all for the mil engine:

Butch, one of our members, Bob Cowan, sells an adapter kit, complete with motor mounts, to put a SBC into an M715 and bolt it up to the stock drivetrain. Send a PM to BCOWANWHEELS (his username) for info and pricing.

On the other hand, wouldn't a F*rd 302 bolt right up to our trannys?

BTW, I moved this thread here to Modified. It fits a little better.

The 302 needs an adapter platefor the tranny and you need to weld in new mounts.
