Plenty of good info. Definately things to consider when I go to purchase an M715.

I had a 230 in a 1/2 ton, back in 71 !!!!!!!!! It's not the 230,s fault you spin it to 4000 rpm, for hours on end and it lets go. I think that's just to many rpm,s for long life. My .02!

What about a 360, 304 or other jeep v8? Are these engines relatively easy to repower a 715? Thanks.

yes, yes they are. They can be bolted in using factory parts. Many FSJ parts fit the Mtrucks.

However, be aware that they won't bolt up to the stock transmission without shortening the input shaft.

Ethan has a 715 with an entire J-truck driveline swapped in.

Yup. I do. Alan in NE did it. Engine mounts bolt right up to the frame. It's real easy to modifiy the FSJ crossmember to bolt onto the M frame. And you "Keep it Jeep" for those who care.

I *LIKE* the 360's, but cost/availability of performance parts compared to the 350's is a no-brainer. Take the the 350.

Another down-side to the 360 is that abortion of a timing cover/oil-pump/fuel-pump cover/housing... It's nice to have the dizzy up front to work on it, but I've had severe issues with alignment and eating cam gears on past blocks.

Now on the plus side, you can typically get a full FSJ donor for less than $1000 with a TH400 already mounted in it.

.... and that TH400 can have the output swapped and you can use all kinds of Tcases with it.

Thanks guys. I'm new to the conversion thing but am familiar with the 715 (stocker). A guy nearby has an M for sale (blown engine) for about $2K. He also has a 360 donor available (needs rebuild) for $300. I was just thinking that that might be a cool project. I still think the truck is overpriced. Any thoughts? I'm a cheapskate.

$2k for a non running truck? it better be rust free and straight as an arrow IMO.
