Thread: Brake Booster addition?

  1. #1

    Default Brake Booster addition?

Okay, I am considering doing a brake booster add, when I swap over to the Chevy 1ton van dual circuit master cylinder.

Has anyone done this? I am curious to hear your stories and see how you did it. What parts have you used. The booster out of a Gladiator or Waggie?

I used a 95 Grand Cherokee booster and maser cylinder. It stops very well. I used it mainly because it is small enough to fit without any clearance issues.

I did have to shorten the booster pushrod though.

As soon as Imagecrap starts working, I will post up some pics of it for you.

^^^ Is that fitted on the passenger side with a remote plunger? Am I looking at that correctly?

I pulled a booster from a 77 J-20, with the adapter plate to the firewall and the pushrod. I had to modify the pushrod and drill a couple holes in the firewall. I put a new MC on for general principles, .works great, , . . power brakes are wonderful!

What master cylinder are people using with this? The chevy van master, or the j-20 master?

The booster pictured above, by 5quarter, looks just like the one on (503m715) Mike's truck parked here at my place. Yes it is on the passanger side. His was a connected to the stock single circuit master cylinder. It has been disconnected since Mike and Al (kiaserjeeps) changed to a manual dual master cylinder. I think they replaced the stock one with the one for a corvette with no booster. Maybe Mike or Al can confirm this.

Mine has this funky thing connected to the stock single circuit master cylinder:

    Here ya go:

Just remeber that any booster assembly will also interfere with the throttle cable coming out of the firewall to some degree. I did a 90 degree angle cable and made it myself to work around it.

Thanks guy. I thik that for the ease of simplicity, I am going to go non-boosted. I figure I can always retrofit later. Also, if I wait, I have a line on a free unit out of a J20, which is better then paying $100 to NAPA for one.

It really only took me a couple hours to do mine, . .the most time-consuming part was modifying the pushrod, .measure 3 times kinda thing to get it right the first time. . .I used the booster out of a 77 J-20, along with the MC, . .I just got a new MC for general principles rather than trust old parts that are this important. FWIW
