sbc 350
Post by wrecker on Sept 16, 2006, 10:17am

'Sup y'all? I'm running a chevy 350 w/ HEI, sm420, stock T-case and axles. The last couple times I've run the truck, it runs great while it's cold, then starts acting like it's not getting enough fuel or losing fire after it warms up. The choke is not hooked up and this is a new problem so I don't think it is choke related. Since it only happened at first when it got warm, I'm kinda scratching my head. It's doing it all the time now-cold or hot. I was thinking of changing the fuel pump, filter, and dropping the tank to see what kinda crap might be blocking the fuel pick up line. My crappy battery connection shouldn't affect the fire since the truck will run w/o the battery hooked up. Anyone have any other ideas? Thanks, Bill

I shoulda mentioned, it's a total non emmissions engine from the same era as the truck.

You should check a couple things, look at the flaper plate of the choke to make sure it is no falling closed, the check fuel line to make sure it is not vapor locking, this happenswhen it is run next to a heat source which causes the fuel to heat up in line and vaporize. also pull the plugs and check for fouling, oil/fuel fouled.

Possible carb icing? It can happen at out side temps as high as 74 degrees. Sounds like its doing it all the time even when thoughly warmed up. So most likely not icing. Get your choke fixed though.

I'd check the plugs first, then replace the cap & rotor then check out the wires and if its still doing it I'd check the coil.
Wait, first I'd change the fuel filter ('cause its easy & cheap) then I'd do the rest.

check the carbon tip inside the distributor cap that goes direct to the coil. I have seen the carbon go bad, and the symptoms were exactly as you described, including the history, .. .. . good luck. .

I had the same problem with my 350 there is a fuel line getting hot and it is causing your carb to vaperlock . check the fuel lines running close to the exhaust
