Thread: Speedo Change

    Default Speedo Change

    Hello Fellow Zoners,
The Speedo face on my truck is really bleached out so I want to replace it.
My question is how do I put the original mileage from my original Speedo onto the replacement Speedo? I have never taken it apart so Im not sure how easy it would be?
    Thanks for your help!

High speed drill? Or, do it Ferris Bueller style by jacking up the rear wheels and letting it run. Might be a little pricey on gas.

Find a good speedo with the mileage close to be under yours and run it forward a bit with a drill...

What kind of mileage do you need?

Whew. I was afraid to open this thread based on the title. Zoners in speedo's would not be a pretty sight.

Binford reset his speedo on his truck. He used a drill. I think it took something like 18 hours to get it set. Use an old drill. You will wear it out doing this.

The overhaul depot didn't worry about resetting the speeedo. That's why you can find some trucks with just a couple of thousand miles on them or less (my deuce had 60 miles when I bought it from GL).

A drill will really be your only choice as the mil units are sealed and cannot be taken apart. At least not so that they won't look like they've been taken apart.

    Hello Jon,
My truck has 14409.8 Miles on the original Speedo.
I have one used one with 8000 miles on it but using a drill im not sure how long that would take? Has anyone ever taken one of these apart??
    Thanks!

You can calculate the time required depending on the speed you run. 6000 miles at 60 mph will take 100 hours. I would just replace it and move on.

put the old speedo and new speedo mileage on the inside of the glove box door and leave the new speedo alone. people have said on the board that when they changed motors when they were in service they put a new speedo in at the same time, if this is true, it may not be true mileage anyway.

Yeah, I used an old drill and just let it run for days on end. I'd unplug it when I wasn't at home or at night in case it started a fire. But I only had a short distance to change it.

And yes, it was to ADD mileage, not reverse it.
