Default 6BT, CUCV Axled M715 Build

Sermis has collected just about all the parts needed to build a M715 with a 6BT, 5 speed, CUCV axles and a cool looking transfer case. My class gets to put it all together. I figured it would be easier to show progress, get help and basically let Sermis know I am not installing the stuff on my truck if I started a thread about it and post all the things in it over how ever long it takes to finish. Here is the thread.

Here is the really clean, rust free and straight frame the truck will be built on:

Notice it has no spring mounts, motor mounts, shock towers, triangular braces or steering box support. The previous owner wanted to put a 4 link on it and cut all the old stuff away.

The solution to find the missing springs, shock towers and spring mounts was to get another frame. That is what I was doing in Houston last weekend. The frame I picked up looked ok while we were loading it. Once it came to my class and we pulled the bed off, it looked awfull. Lots of rust and a few paper thin areas of the frame. But, it had all the stuff we needed. Here it is after we have stripped the rear axle and leaf springs off with the front axle still hanging by a single front leaf spring mount:

The front axle and springs should come off today. One of the rear spring shackles has already been cleaned all up along with the spring and should be on today as well. Maybe even both of them. Then we can install them with the shackle flipped. Then we can start putting the nice CUCV axles on. Here they are waiting for attention:

More will follow as things happen.

if the stock stuff is gone from the frame you are using why not just build you own spring mounts? this allows for the use of a more common, better riding and longer spring? i actually know of a build thread that has a few pictures if you needed to look

You are correct about the info being out there Ryan. We are just doing it as Sermis wants. Plus, I will have to beg and plead with the Welding teacher just to get the plasma cutter and mig in my class for a day or two as it is.

all i am going to say is; to much information.

It looks like the calipers on that 14 bolt might need to be clocked. are they going to interfere with the springs?

i can't believe you aren't equipped with at least a welder. you need to talk with your administration. feel free to tell them ryan said so. i am sure that will be a convincing argument.

The reason I don't have a welder is that I used to be the welding teacher. When I switched classes, I took a nice MIG/TIG unit with me down the hall. My auto tech students were doing as much welding on some days as the kids in Welding. School politics came into play and welding is only allowed to be done by welding students now.
We got the rear springs cleaned up and fitted today. I put tires on the rear axle and rolled it under them just to see how it would fit. Plus, that lift has catches about 4 inches too high and about 4 inches too low for where I want the frame to be since it will bleed down over the weekend if it is not on a catch. The perches line up with the springs great, the bleeders on top of the calipers have enough clearance to put a short socket and wrench over them and everything looks ok. I left the frame sitting on the axle in the rear and tall jack stands in the front.

We will leave the rear alone once we make sure the u-bolts will be ok and concentrate on front spring mounts, front axle fit and cleaning all the crud off the frame for the next few weeks. We might even throw some paint at it. I can't use paint guns to paint in my room because of more school politics. That is the job of the autobody collision repair class. Which means a few rattle cans are going to die to make the frame look good.

I will post pictures as things actually progress.

Secondary or Post Secondary?? Ahh yes, the good old school politics, gotta love it. I'm an Auto Collision instructor at a College ,but we also teach area high school students on Saturday mornings. The High Schoolers really like that "Monster Garage" stuff. They help me on my 715 also. Cool Pictures, keep them coming. Oh ya........Perkins Money.
