Thread: Color of frame

    Default Color of frame

I am going to paint my truck in desert camoflauge, what I like to know is what color do you paint the frame and underside of the bed? Also what color do you leave the inside of the cab?

My camo truck has a black frame with OD cab interior. Underside of bed would be OD. Think of a stock truck that came from the factory in OD and was painted in camo some time later.

Frames are black. The underside of stuff is OD, but since you're deviating from stock anyway, I'd probably with desert tan, probably the middle tone.

A freind of mine got a exspandable duce that came from 3ID and was painted desert sand. They painted the inside of the cab and I mean everything inside. Steering wheel, seats, everything... But most GI paint jobs only woried about the outside of the truck.

I thought that we all had this great original frame color debate on the old server, and it was determined that early 715's had od green frames that got a field applied black undercaoting over them. and that later they were undercoated at the factory and skipped the od painting step. somewhere I have the picture from when I restored mine that showed the black undercoating pealing off to show the original factory applied od green showing through.

I dunno, mine is fairly early and has a black rubberized coating on it and has OD on the last 2' of the frame end near the rear bumper and from the firewall forward. It has been repainted several times and the last military job was in 4 color camo.

The black rubberized undercoating was field applied in the motorpools first and then became standard in production. When I was restoring mine, I had read somewhere in a TM of the directive for all new vehicles to have a black undercoating sprayed to the frame when recieved into a motorpool as a rust preventative measure.

Here's the close up pic of my frame

You can see where the black undercoating is flaking off to show the original OD green under it. Also note the bed mount, it harder to see but, where the mount sat there is some green along with the rust. But there is no undercoating there which would show that the undercoating was applied after the truck was assembled.

Does this mean that the SPRINGS were black also? Or are they painted OD?
