Here we go... So far, the new stainless tank is in, with new sending unit, fill hose, and rubber fuel lines. Tank straps painted while they were out.

Throttle reassembled, cable lubed and free-travelling once again. Got the engine started, it had a slight rattle/knock at no-load high idle, then it quit. Just shut off like I kilt the spark. Now the engine spins, but s-l-o-w-l-y. Thinking "weak batteries" (they were take-out hand-me-downs from my Super Duty last winter when it got hard to start in the winter), so I replaced them with new. No change, still cranks slow, too slow to start.

I'm thinking I wiped a bearing as there is an apparent resistance but no obvious new noises. I'm afraid it's time to swap in the spare engine our member Oilcan fronted me years ago...

Thoughts on the slow-crank thing before I start the swap?

Hmmm, chuck the timing chain and I'm dead-heading the pistons with closed valves?

No, your cam won't turn but some valves will still be open. You don't want your pistons and valves to meet. I didn't read what engine you have but you either have to pull a cam or rocker arms to release all pressure on the valves.

Stock engine. I see where you're going.
