Thread: Hard Starting

    Default Hard Starting

I have a 1967 Stock M-715 that recently developed a hard starting problem, it won't start without using starting fluid and today failed to start completely. It was out and running last Fri and started easy that day. Any suggestions on where to start?

Anytime I experienced that it was the coil or ballast inside the stock 24 volt distributor.

Coil and/or ballast would be a great starting point.

Past that, is it flooding or is the bowl draining out after it is shut off?

What was wierd was that my truck would have hard starting with spark; but the spark was a little weak. A few squirts of ether and it fired up all the time. Once I replaced the coil and ballast, the spark was much hotter and never had a problem again. Pull the coil and if you have the external ballast underneath the coil, check it for cracks.

Not to hi-jack this thread but I have a question about ballast. I bought a new coil a few months ago and installed it in the dist.. There wasn't a ballast thing in there before and so I guessed the ballast was already inside the new coil. Is it possible to get the truck to run without a ballast? I've suddenly picked up a miss that I can't diagnose.

The truck will run great without the ballast resistor, possibly even better than with it... until the coil burns out. Leaving the engine off with the key on is the quickest way to do this.

There are 2 types of coils used in the military ignition.

Type A uses an external resistor and is marked that an external resistor is needed, printed right on the case.

Type B has the resistor built in and doesnt need an external...I think I remember seeing one and that it is printed to note that as well.

Isthis 12 volt with the 230 engine or with a different engine?
