    Parking brake band removal
    Post by binfordm715 on Aug 19, 2006, 10:32am

I can't figure out how to copy the pic from the manual to post here, but it's figure 78 on page 202 of the -34P Tech Manual.

I'm trying to figure out how to remove the brake adjustment bolt (that J-bolt), item #10. As I pull it up, it smacks into the bottom of the cab floor before it clears the brake support plate, item #14. Do I have to take that friggin' #14 off to get that bolt out, or is there a trick that I'm just not seeing?

And Bob (Cowan), it looks so far like my brake band will be okay as a core. I'll take a pic of it for you when I get it off. If I get it off!

    Thanks, guys.....

Ahhhh.... I see it now. Paragraph 2-103b in the -20 manual. I have to drop the t'case crossmember down about 1/2".

    How convenient.....

BE ALOT EASYER TO JUST PULL YOKE OFF WITH DRUM AND REMOVE THE BAND BRACKET. JUST 6-3/8THS BOLTS HOLD IT ON AND LEAVE T-CASE MOUNTED UP.

    Tim,
if you pull both springs out and undo the bolt that is #2 you can wiggle the Jbolt out. I have done it and I know of a few other members that have as well.

It is kind of a head scratcher though. Why did they design it like that? you think as soon as you see it.

I don't have enough clearance. I've got the lower spring out, but need to move the J-bolt up another inch or so to get it out of the hole in #14 there, but I can't because it's smacking the bottom of the cab floor. I suspect that's why the book says to loosen the crossmember bolts a bit to lower it enough to get that bolt out.

    Tim,

I've done it too. It can be done, it just takes patience. I had the same thoughts when I was doing mine but if you keep fiddling with it you will get it. After the third time, (don't ask) it was a piece of cake. You may booger the threads on the J bolt a little, but take a big punch an pound it out. It really will find its own way with the floor panel and come out. Believe it or not, it goes back in much easier.
