Thread: Rear Leaf Spring Bushing Material

  1. #1

Default Rear Leaf Spring Bushing Material

    Guys,

What are everyones thoughts about changing the rear bushing material.

Anyone think nylon or UHMW bushings would be better than the bronze ones that are currently on there?

I have access to all materials (UHMW, Nylon, Ertlyte, Nyloil, and Oil-Impregnated Bronze [OEM] ) but would like to fabriate what may work best. My truck will not see sustained heavy loading or towing... more daily driving/show work.

I wouldn't see a problem with some of the harder materials, but they will wear faster than the bronze.

Just what is "oil impregnated bronze"? Don't think I've ever heard of it before, and what are its uses?

Bushings, clutch pilot bushing would probably be the most common use that you would see it in.

Anyone offhand have dimenions for the bushings? I'm only finding info on the fronts.. but nothing on the rear...

Will eventually measure on my chassis but the springs need to stay on for the short term time being.

OK...the front is different than the rear on the rear spring...

The bushing is "made" into the leaf...when I bought these, the metal sleeve is already in them...

I also have a spare frame and I checked the numbers versus the mounts on the frame...

    Front eye of rear spring:

    Bushing Id: .875 inch
Mount on frame OD: .875 inch
    Width: 2.5 inch
Outside of bushing/inside of leaf spring eye: 1.090 inch

    rear eye of rear spring:

    Bushing Id: 1.000 inch
Mount on frame OD: 1.000 inch
    Width: 2.5 inch
Outside of bushing/inside of leaf spring eye: 1.225 inch

The OD of the bushing/ID of the spring eye is as close as I can get with it in their...it might be off slightly but I took great care to make sure I was at the edge and straight and measured several times...its gotta be pretty close...

One would have to press these pieces out and measure them to do better...
