    Broke an upper shock mount
Post by oilcan on Jun 27, 2006, 12:03am

I was driving the back roads today, and as luck would have it, my pops was behind me flashing his lights n' stuff. Once I got stopped, he said my right rear shock was dragging for the last mile or so. (Hard to hear a horn toot behind a diesel 715.) Turns out the stud holding the top of the shock to the frame broke off.

I wire-tied the shock up off the ground & went on my way, so I haven't actually looked at the damage, and it's really too late to go poking around with a flashlight. What kind of repair am I looking at? Can I knock the stud stub out of the frame and replace it, or will I have to weld the contraption back together?

It's basically a plate with the stud welded to it. IIRC the assembly is welded to the frame and extends thru the bracket you can see in the pic...sorta see anyway. May be better off trying to cut the stud of near the frame and attaching a new one.

I think those plates are bolted to the frame, aren't they? As I recall, Saxon had all his removed and sitting in the bed of his 715.

i was looking at this yesterday, the shock mount is welded to a reinforcing plate on the outside of the frame just rear of the bumpstop, then also welded to a bracket that is riveted to the top frame rail, so you would have to cut 2 circular welds to replace it

I got to looking at it this evening, (no time to work on it) and it looks like someone already had some fun with the mount. The bracket was missing, and the stud broke off about 3/4" from the inside of the framerail. Looks like a bunch of weld boogers in there already.

    Gads, what fun!
