I used a chevy 350 with a novak adapter. If i did it again, I would find a fuel-injected chevy 350 and get the whole engine/tranny combo. Get the 2wd version and keep your NP200 xfer case, or get a 4wd version with a passenger side drop and re-do your driveshafts. An overdrive tranny such as the 700r4 really adds to the driveability.

Guys have done everything from cummins 4bt turbo diesels to 501 caddy motors. Just about anything will fit with enough $$$, but the chevys are probably the cheapest to get parts for.

Chevy is cheaper/easier, mostly for parts interchange later.

    Grab everything. I recommend a post-87 350 w/TBI and a 700r4 or TH400 to go with it.

    AMC's work good too...

If you go with the Ford, you need a 2wd NP435 tranny.

What do you want to do with the truck? There a pile of options, so choose the one that fits your purpose best. What are you keeping... what's expendable?

Intercoolers on the diesels have been a problem. The Cummins 6BT - Bob Cowan has worked that one out, I think.

Keep in mind, you'll likely be doing a tranny awap at the same time. The adapter for the chevy to the stock T-98 is available though. Not sure about any others.

also keep in mind: the Chevy to t98 adapter costs more than the 350/465 or 350/automatic usually costs.
