CAN SOMEBODY TELL ME IF THE SHIFT PATTERN ON A SM420 IS TO YOU AND BACK FOR REVERSE. ITS NOT THE SAME AS MY SM465 FOR SURE. SEEMS LIKE 1ST GEAR IS SUPER LOW ALSO.

Low on those is something like 7.05:1. No idea on the shift pattern though....

    Normal H pattern for 1-4.

Reverse is left and down. Or to put it in clear terms. Hit your right knee and then the seat.

    Yup. From the Novak website:

    Quote:
The SM420 is a top loaded, top shifting truck style transmission. It enjoys the lowest compound gear of all the common truck transmissions at 7.05:1 and as such it is a popular choice for those wanting a very low crawling gear.

The SM420 features a conventional "H" shift pattern, with reverse being towards the left side, and down.

That 1st gear makes it the perfect "single person hay bale loading" transmission around. Just tie the steering wheel straight and let the truck idle while you run around picking up the hay.

I don't need it right now, but how much? I have one in my '66 K20 and knowing what they are worth is always a good thing.

I have one of those rebuilt waiting to go into my 65 cj-5 someday after my truck is finished. They are nice and short. Love that granny low.

I think those sm420 bolt right up to a 225 dauntless, in your jeepster. Need an adapter for the transfer case though. Heres what I did for my cj , 225 dauntless, sm420, dana 18 with 20 case, tera low gears, saturn overdrive with Pto for Koenig winch. Great combo in a little jeep.

Tim "around here" $150 will score you a 2wd SM420.
Price can vary greatly by location. If you come up needing one, hollar before FE 08 and I'll see what I can scrounge up.
