AMC 360 engine conversion
Post by jeepcjjones on Oct 18, 2006, 7:22pm hello all, I have been a long time and multiple jeep owner but just recently have obtained a m715. The stock engine drained about 3 gallons of water and no oil from the pan. I would like to swap and AMC 360 from a rusted out chief. I have search the board and found that the swap is basic except for the transmission input shaft needing to be modified. I am not sure what exactly is needed. Any information on this swap would be appreciated. Thanks |

Post by fisherman on Oct 18, 2006, 7:56pm Does your donor Jeep come with a manual trans? If so I would keep in and install with the engine. I'm sure someone here has done a 360 swap. I am doing a buick 350 swap, not quite finished yet. |

Re: AMC 360 engine conversion
Post by jeepcjjones on Oct 19, 2006, 6:21pm The donor jeep has a t18 transmission with a Dana 20 transfer case. I probably could swap the transmission as well but was thinking it may be better some other projects. was hoping keeping the old one was fairly simple. |

Re: AMC 360 engine conversion
Post by fisherman on Oct 19, 2006, 7:59pm Not sure what you would need to do to adapt a 360 to a factory t-98. I used a t-18 input shaft onto my t-98 with a different bearing setup to adapt a buick 350 to the t-98. I believe the t-18 bolt pattern is the same as our t-98, but not positive. The 360 bellhousing would work if the bolt patterns are the same.. You would have to make sure the input shafts were the same, and get a pilot bushing that works. Then of course all the proper clutch pieces. I'm sure it can be done, just don't know the specifics. I wouldn't run the dana 20 transfer case personally, but the t-18 trans should be up to par. Although both came in fullsize Jeep trucks. I think the M-715 is probably heavier than a civilian Jeep truck, but then again I've never weighed either. Good Luck |

Re: AMC 360 engine conversion
Post by compexp on Oct 19, 2006, 11:06pm the input shaft on the J-10 is longer I believe by 1.5" or so. I looked at doing that and decided to go with the Chevy and Novak kit. Doing it again, I would use the chevy motor and tranny or use the Jeep motor and it's associated tranny. Then all you have to do is the mid-shaft or tranny mounts. |

Re: AMC 360 engine conversion
Post by fisherman on Oct 20, 2006, 9:29pm Use the 360, the t-18 with a yoke and go with a 205 or 202 divorced case instead of a 20. |

Re: AMC 360 engine conversion
Post by 77cj7 on Oct 29, 2006, 8:49pm Id recommend the same thing as fisherman. However, if you want to keep the stock trans and tcase, i believe that the t18 input shaft can be swapped into the t98. |

Re: AMC 360 engine conversion
Post by fisherman on Oct 29, 2006, 10:39pm Yes it can, I have my factory t-98 with a longer input shaft from a t-18 to bolt everything up to the buick 350. Just needs a different style bearing, carrier bearing and input shaft from the t-18 and it will bolt to your 360, I do believe. |

Re: AMC 360 engine conversion
Post by jeepcjjones on Nov 14, 2006, 7:06pm Any ideas on where to get just the input shaft from a t18. I have found a 360 engine without dismantling my Chief so I really only need the input shaft. Thanks |
