    Frame Paint?
Post by snuffy on Jul 16, 2006, 12:23pm

Looking for recommendations for painting/coating the frame when I start snatching the body off. Prior planning....

I'll be up above the Manson-Nixon line (nearly in Canada) when I complete the truck, so those road conditions would apply.

Considered Line-X, but wondered about PITA issues with the electrical system and grounding.

I just wire-brushed my frame, used an etch primer and then semi-gloss black.

Depends how much work and $ you want to put in it.

    Sandblasting would be best.

I have used Por15 on one and have had good luck with it.

I used a Sherwin Williams epoxy primer and carc paint on another about 3 weeks ago. This is what the military uses , so I would assume its good. It stuck good.

Line x would be good I would think. Probably costly.

I've heard good things about POR-15. Nothing is going to be full proof. If you intend to drive it on salty streets in wintertime then a good undercoating might be in order also.

I wouldn't recommend Line-X. My 2003 Dodge had it sprayed in and its all coming out, I can peel it off with my bare hands. Linex won't warranty it either. If you want to do a bedliner type stuff check out Extreme Liner. Better than most. I am going to knock all the loose stuff off my frame, use lacquer thinner and brake clean, the 3 coats of Hammerite. Paint right over the rust. If there is some surface rust the paint encapsulates and stops it , also bonds the best when slightly rusty. You need to do at least 3 coats though. Fisherman

Thanks, Bob - just trying not to offend the yankees!

Have access to a commercial sandblaster. Line-X sticks really well.... as long it goes on straight to clean metal. It'll peel up sometimes if it's over paint, clearcoat and especially rust.

Looks like I've got some research to do... I appreciate the suggestions. Keep them coming.

Another possible is to have the frame zinc galvanized dipped. Hopefully by the end of Aug. I should have mine done. A couple months ago I was told $500. When I get it done I'll post pics.

I was huntin for the cheapest, but most complete method. I just couldn't understand the concept of how sandblasting can get into the nooks & crannies of the boxed sections of the frame and then you do you get the paint or sealer in there too. Most of the places around here wanted at least $600 just for the blasting.

Just another option for ya to research.

I'll bet I could almost build a new frame for that amount. Good option though. I think I'll stick with do it myself. I'd like to see the finished product though

Well I'll put my two cents in ..... I found RustBullet far better than POR-15. Paint over it with black enamel while tacky. Great stuff!!!
