    Default Transfer Case Questions

I need a little help with my transfer case. I cant get the lever that engages the front axle to move more than a quarter inche in either direction and can't feel if its actually changing anything. So as of this moment I dont know if I am in 4 wheel, but the truck feels like it is just by the way it drives. Tonight I will put it up on the lift and see if I can spin the front wheels seperate from the rears. Any Idea on what I could be fighting?

If the 2 levers are to the rear, its in 4wd, low range...top speed would be around 35 mph or so.

If the rear lever is back and the front lever is forward, the truck is in 4wd, hi range...top speed around 45-60 depending on the truck.

If both are forward, it is in 2wd, hi range...45-60 mph top speed again.

If the truck has been driven in 4wd mode for an extended period on hard surfces...pavement...then the tcase gets "wind up" due to there being nothing to "give" on corners when one tire or one axle rotates at a different rate than the other.

If it isnt too bad, you should be able to drive in reverse to help ""unwind" the case.

Jacking it up and spinning it in reverse may be a great solution...but it may take a bit to get it unwound.

If the truck is in 4wd, rotating a rear tire should rotate a front tire...in 2wd, it shouldnt rotate the front...so easy check there.

Are you sure this is a stock truck with stock t-case? Many are modified and you didnt say exactly...though you posted in the stock forum so I am assuming it is...

Drive backwards in a circle on dirt bopping the throttle while pushing on the levers. Don't take a hammer to the shift rods.

Getting mine from 4WD to 2WD again can sometimes take a little juggling. Back up, pull forward, neutral, turn off the engine, restart and pull forward......There doesn't seem to be any set way to do it, just whatever works.

Also, be sure to have a good look at all of the linkage to make sure it hasn't been "worked on" previously.

Mine was "worked on" by the fire department and is backward from the stock way.

Jack up the front-end to get the tension off the front drive-train and let it unwind. should be able to shift it then.
