Thread: How to tell the difference between dot 3-4 and dot 5 silicon

How can I tell whats in my rig? It supposed to be dot 5 silicone. Its discolored muddy brownish colored. I have heard silicone smells like cow poo. Is there any other way to tell before I spend 24 bucks a pint to flush this thing? If I put silicone in a regular system, I'll end up having to replace all the rubber. That would pretty much suck big time... Anybody got any tricks?

    silicone is blueish/purple.

replacing the seals is a quasi wives tale. people say it wont work, but when the military went to it they flushed the dot3 and just put the new stuff in. they did some lengthy testing when they did so. prior to this rebuild i flushed mine with alcohol, then a little dot 5 and ran it like that.... im running dot 5 now too.

Al: muddy brake fluid= bad, rust in the system somewhere. Flush! My muddy fluid took out the M/C, as the autopsy showed scoring and rust grit in there...

Lee: if it IS a wive's tale, the OEM's and manual companies are helping spread it with big warnings everywhere..... but it bears more investigation I think. Brakes aren't something one wants to get wrong LOL

I thought about it over lunch. I'm going to rebuild the wheel cylinders and master cylinder. I'm also going to flush all old fluid out followed by compressed air. Then I will add the dot 5 stuff and bleed till I get a solid pedal. Brakes are one thing I don't want to be anything but perfect. I have already ordered the parts and a gallon of dot 5 for 35 bucks. Napa charges 24 bucks for a pint... Big ripoff... Thanks for the replies guys. I want to be able to stop.

Dot 3 and Dot 5 don't play well together...Some say it will turn to jelly in the system..I'ven't seen that, but I do know that one will sit ontop of the other...so the won't mix. Since your rebuilding all the parts just use some plan old rubbing alcohol and run it through the lines and then run the new dot 5 and you'll be all set. Good luck

Cool, I'll give that a try. I need to take a vacation so I can catch up on all this repair stuff.

Good info Joe, but you need to get the 99.9% alcohol instead of the 70% stuff. You can get both at wally world. The 70% stuff will leave water in the brake lines.

    Al,
Where did you find DOT 5 for less than $9.00 per quart? I would like to switch my M715 over, plus my mini requires it. Thanks.

I found it at a place in Florida. I'm confused right now at the name of the place. I placed several different orders from several different states. I expect a few packages Mon or tues. I'll let you know when it shows up. The bookmark is at work for where I got it, and I don't go back to work till wednesday. I'll definately post then. I'm fearing the bill for all this stuff. I'm outa control.... Retail therapy at it's best! I did get a call from my ex wife tonight. I guess I have a 1000.00 refund coming back from our recent house sale. That means I can buy more brake fluid right??? Ha ha.. Tomorrow morn I'm heading into town to go see a military resto specialist guy to check out his work. My buddy I'm going with has been looking for a military jeep to buy. On my way back if I have time, I will go into work and find the company in my favorites list and post up. Till then...
