I have a question for anyone who lives in CA or who would know. I will be going to college at UCLA most likly and before I go to college i will be building a 71 Barracuda. In Wisconsin we only have to meet the emissions standards for the body year. Does anyone know if I keep the car registered in Wisconsin do I still have to get inspected and comply with CA law if I drive it in CA for any amount of time? If so how bad are the standards for emissions. Thanks for anyhelp.

CA doesn't have vehicle safety inspections like other states. Smog checks are for vehicles registered in CA not out of state vehicles. Technically, if you live here longer than a few months, then you should transfer to CA registration and that's when the fun begins. I worked with a guy who kept his car registered in Nevada for years.

Vehicles older than 1974 do not require smog checks every two years, only when changing ownership or registering in CA for the first time. The vehicle has to pass the smog spec's for model year of mfg. Nothing smog wise can be removed. If you put a newer year engine with things like fuel injection into the Cuda, you may be entering that gray area. That's when the headachs start.

The big issue for you will be your residence. California law gives you 10 days from the date you establish a residence (and they don't care if it's only temporary, as in going to college) to get a California drivers license and register your vehicles. Practically speaking, no one will care until you A) get stopped for a law violation or B) off one of your neighbors who's paying the ridiculous cost of California plates. A 1971 car won't be very high probably around $100 a year AND THE GOOD NEWS!!!! No annual smog inspections for 1973 or older. In years past, they would have charged you a $300 impact fee but after millions in collections, it was found to be illegal.

Hope you're ready to pay $2.50 a gallon for premium!
Mine just keeps getting taken further apart.

Going to be a nice low comperssion torque monster with great gas milage for a big block. All things consitered its going to be a great ride once I find a body for under 5 - 6 grand.. It isent neon 30mpg but it will be a great little screaming beast tacoma:P I wouldent touch a ford on brians life

UCLA has a dopeass campus and many many many hot chicks. Don't listen to Gary, LA ain't that bad - just stay outta N Hollywood. If you do end up at UCLA, give me a holler and I'll take you to Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles for some west coast style eats.
