Thread: 230 Distributor Problem(s)

    Default 230 Distributor Problem(s)

I posted up about a Pertronix problem I thought I had. Turns out, the distributor/oil pump drive has ceased to function, and I'm in the middle of trying to figure out why.

After removing the securing nut, I can only get the distributor to come out maybe 3/8" and it stops. It won't go any further. Any ideas?

I REALLY want to avoid removing that timing chain cover it bolts to for several reasons, not the least of which is that it's parked in the yard, with dust & leaves blowing all around it. I don't have a puller to remove the crankshaft pulley, anyway.

Thanks for any insights, double thanks for any solution that doesn't involve removal of that cover.

    Sorry for the late reply.

A few Zone members have found the distributor really stuck in the timing cover due to galvanic corrosion.
And even with age, the O ring still grips the bore very well, especially with it trying to scrape out the corrosion while trying to pull the distributor out.

When you say that it stops, do you mean that it is getting stuck?
Or does it feel like it is hitting something?
Could be that the one of the coupling shear pins might have worked loose or broke, and is preventing the assembly from coming out.

If the distributor has "ceased to function" , the distributor shaft may have seized in it's bushing and has sheared one of the coupling pins, and may have stressed the soft drive gear on the crank.

Here is my spare NOS drive gear for reference, it looks to be made of brass with a babbitt metal coating on it.

    Thank you Dan.

After looking at the old distributor and your pix, I’ve pretty much concluded that one of the roll pins in that little Lovejoy coupler has worked its way partially out and is preventing removal of the distributor. The distributor itself rotate freely with no slop.

That drive gear looks pretty beefy, so I can’t imagine it’s where the fault lies.

After looking at the manual and your pix, I’ve reconciled myself to removing that timing chain cover, so:

Where do I get a crankshaft pulley puller?

Who sells the needed gaskets? I haven’t had much luck finding them.

Can someone outline the procedure, since I haven’t seen it specifically referred to in the manuals I’ve looked at?

    Thank you again, Dan.

    The fun begins...

Sorry to hear that you are having so much problem.

Many auto parts stores will lend you a "Harmonic Balancer Puller" for free. Check your Auto Zone, NAPA or whatever.

I have a puller you can borrow if you need one, I just pulled mine to remove replace the seal and should not need it right away.

New weak link exposed...sorry to hear this...
Is there a way to prevent this from happening by somehow making a stop that prevents the pin from moving out...thinking it might be a good safety thing for stock ignition trucks...

You suppose it fits a 230, Don? This is just a basic crankshaft pulley, no balancer IIRC. I guess there's no harm in trying one out, being free & all.
