12 Volt Starter

I converted my M715 to 12V, but I'm still using the 24V starter. It has become impossible to start when the engine is warm. Does anyone out there know of a readily-available 12V starter? I don't think that the stock 24V starter is spinning fast enough with just 12V running through it.

There are 2 choices here...

1. Tour the junkyards and ebay and look for a 63-65 civilian Jeep with a 230 engine...they used a 12 volt starter that interchanges wth the mil 24v one just fine...hard to find but out there.

2. Some starter/alternator rebuilders can rewind the starter to operate in 12 volts, check out those in your neighborhood...something the size of Albany should have a good rebuilder in the area or know of one that can do that.

In the short run, you could just wire a second battery in via a solenoid just to turn the starter, giving you 24 volts. This was a trick that we used to do all the time on the 6 volt WWII Brit armored cars I used to restore. Worked like a charm. We'd stick the extra battery on a trickle charger when the carriers were going to sit for a while, as it was not attached to the generator.
