Where can I get some new points and condensor for my stock 24 volt 230? AB Linn? I am sure Memphis has them but they are pricey...I wonder if these could be had at a local NAPA? Part numbers?

What gap do people use? The .020 stock setting?

How do I hook up my dwell meter? I have an old style dwell meter with needle and a newer digital one? What one is better to use? Any help on how to hook it up etc would be great.

My truck was always hard to start, especially cold, regardless of what the temperature was outside - summer or winter. I go to check the points and the screw was loose on the holdown and the point were at about .010. I regapped the points to .020 and now it runs/starts fairly quick. The old points do look a bit worn though...

The napa part numbers-

Points- Echlin #Cl725A
Condensor- Echlin #A131a

If you have a carquest near, here are the numbers for them.

Points- AL4556xp
Condensor- AL118x
Rotor- AL154 (note, this rotor takes some very minor modification to miss the condensor)
Basically make it look like the one that you take out.

I use the .020 setting for the points.

That is the right points gap....to hook up a dwell meter one needs to know what the particular meter wants...mine is a Sears unit and it hooks up with one lead clipped to coil negative and the other to a good ground. I prefer the dwell method myself.

Which unit would be better? As long as they are both accurate, its probably a moot point.

The dwell setting for a stock military ignition:

38? to 44?
An ignitor dwell angle of more than 44? (small gap) may cause hard starting. A reading of less than 38? (large gap) may cause engine to misfire at high speeds or underload.

Brute....

How do I hook up the dwell lead to the coil wires since the coil is encased under the cap housing? Do you remove the large bolt/cover on top of the distributor cap housing to attach the lead to the coil negative?

Also, those NAPA numbers for the points and condensor are no good at my local NAPA...the guy plugged them in and had no luck. I Guess I will have to call AB when I get home...the only thing that's a bummer about him is that he doesn't take credit cards....that mean I have to go and get a money order and mail it to him which delays everything an additonal week....

The big hex on the ignitor housing cover over the coil is the place to go through to hook up to coil negative. That is the test port for diagnostics anyway...so that is the place.

The numbers i listed were old numbers, hikers numbers are the cross for the old ones. Parts guy just was to lazy to get the book out, and cross them.

Well I ordered a set of points from AB Linn...$11 shipped to my front door.

I went to start my truck today cold and she just cranked and cranked. The points were a bit worn and rough so I guess I will replace them when I get the new points and go from there. I have had this problem for a while now. I will recheck the timing now that I gapped the points the other day to see where I am at. I am at wits end with this hard starting problem!!
